Upper Volta gained her independence from France in 1960. Upper Volta ( French: Haute-Volta) was a colony of French West Africa established on 1 March 1919, from territories that had been part of the colonies of Upper Senegal and Niger and the Cte d'Ivoire. Although there is a bicycle assembly plant in Upper Volta, the country is essentially reliant on French imports. Crisis Phase (August 5, 1960-June 21, 1970): Upper Volta formally achieved its independence from France with Maurice Yamogo as the countrys first. They are not only cheaper than cars but reflect the transportation customs of the French, who also use mopeds as a low-cost transport.
